The Detective position is located at the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System in Leavenworth, KS. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Initiate and conduct investigations that may involve felonies and misdemeanors. Interrogate suspects. Testify in court, as required. Investigate complaints, leads and tips using all investigative techniques available. Prepares written reports on investigative efforts. Performs administrative assignments, as assigned. Primary Evidence Custodian for the Topeka VA Campus. Performs patrol duty as needed. Work schedule:

Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Investigation of Fitness:
A character investigation may be conducted on applicants selected for employment. The purpose of such an investigation is to secure evidence of the candidate's honesty, integrity, general character, and loyalty to the U. S. Government. Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-6 or equivalent) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. Firearms:
Must be qualified to carry firearms and maintain firearm proficiency. Incumbent will be required to carry a firearm while performing duties and maintain firearm proficiency. Psychological Assessment:
Applicants will be required to take an initial and annual psychological assessment of their emotional and mental stability by a psychiatrist or psychologist. Any emotional or mental condition which could cause the applicant/officer to be a hazard to others or self during stress situations and physical altercations will disqualify. The psychological assessment will consist of a structured interview and a standardized objective written psychological testing by a police psychologist or psychiatrist. Certification requirement:
Incumbent must obtain and maintain a current certification as a VA Police officer or successfully complete the VA Basic Police Academy, The VA Investigators Courses, and VA Evidence Custodian Course Drivers license:
Applicants must possess a current, valid State driver's license, have a safe driving record, and demonstrate that he or she is medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
